Infectious diseases role opportunity for resident doctors
The NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Infectious Diseases Specialty Group is on the lookout for a resident doctor representative to take up a career-enhancing position
The Group is offering an exciting opportunity for a resident doctor to help make infectious diseases research activities more accessible to resident doctors across Scotland.
In an associated role, the person selected would represent Scotland as part of a key UK forum organised by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research Delivery Network (RDN).
The Infection National Specialty Forum helps to support and deliver studies into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infections in all age groups and all levels of care, while challenging and addressing perceived barriers to research engagement.
The voluntary position will have a duration of up to two years and travel expenses to attend meetings can be provided if required.
Key activities for the resident doctor representative include:
- Liaising with the Group’s Specialty Lead/NIHR Senior Investigator for Infectious Diseases, Dr Charis Marwick
- Disseminating relevant information to fellow resident doctors in relation to NRS/NIHR infection research
- Helping to develop and support new Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to take part in research studies, including getting involved in planning and delivering research events
- Supporting the identification and development of other innovative ways to improve opportunities for ECRs to take part in research studies
- Act as an advocate for the NIHR Infection National Specialty Group, promoting it to external stakeholders
Dr Marwick said: “This highly collaborative role is an opportunity for resident doctors to increase their knowledge about infection research, play an active part in strengthening infectious disease research, and broaden their skills to support future career growth.”
“They will also form new connections and use the insights they have gained to help shape future initiatives across the UK.”
“I would encourage anyone interested to apply before the end of this month and feel free to contact me to arrange a one-to-one conversation if you’d like to discuss the role in more detail.”
To apply for the post, please submit a CV and one-page cover letter to tay.tascportfolio@nhs.scot by Friday 30 January 2026. For further information, please contact Dr Marwick.
