#Red4Research Day set to be elevated by striking illumination of Clydebank crane

One of Scotland’s most unique visitor attractions will be giving a ‘big lift’ to raising awareness around #Red4Research Day (Friday 20)
Inspired by NHS Golden Jubilee researchers, Clydebank's iconic, 150-foot-tall Titan Crane will be lit up in stunning red to mark the day of awareness — now in its sixth year — with the Golden Jubilee National Hospital’s Surgical Centre also illuminated throughout the week.
#Red4Research Day 2025 urges members of the public, study participants, and researchers to unite by wearing red, demonstrating their support and appreciation for the commitment of those who continue to participate in, deliver, and support clinical research.
Organisers state: “The R&D community is innovative, flexible and dynamic. Research doesn’t just happen though, people make it happen — research participants, patients, professionals, volunteers and regulatory bodies all collectively working together.”
Head of Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of Scottish Government, Euan Dick said: “On #Red4Research Day, we have an opportunity to show just how proud we are of our incredible research community here in Scotland with a powerful demonstration of support.
“Illuminating Clydebank’s Titan Crane and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital’s Surgical Centre will do that in spectacular fashion, alongside the great activity happening across the country with so many getting involved in celebrating everyone involved in health and care research.
“It is vital that we continue to leverage Scotland’s research expertise and harness our vast knowledge and experience to improve care with the help of vital volunteers.
“As #Red4Research notes, people make research happen — the invaluable contribution of members of the public working closely with researchers and healthcare professionals underpins everything we do.
“Every member of this diverse group has a key role to play — from patients, carers, and family to those who use health and social care services. Their collective contribution is so important, and we are immensely grateful for it, but we also need more.”
As part of the awareness day, NHS Research Scotland (NRS) is backing Be Part of Research — a UK-wide partnership between the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the UK’s devolved administrations including Scotland, and the NHS.
The free online service matches people to suitable health and care studies based on their interests and where they live, making it easier to get involved in life-changing research.
NRS is further encouraging more Scottish researchers to add their studies to Be Part of Research. The service helps researchers quickly find suitable volunteers for studies in all health and care specialties, including social care and public health, speeding up study recruitment.
People in Scotland can also register with SHARE, Scotland’s Health Research Register and Biobank, to be informed of future opportunities to participate in research studies that they could be suitable for.
Teams right across NRS will be getting involved in spreading the message of #Red4Research.
Research Institute staff at NHS Golden Jubilee — in partnership with the NHS Golden Jubilee Women’s Network and supported by NRS Cardiovascular Research Network — will be focusing on the importance of women looking after their heart health for #Red4Research Day.
Female colleagues can drop into NHS Golden Jubilee’s Clinical Research Facility to meet the research nurses and have blood pressure and BMI checked by registered research nurses, as well as grip strength measured by the registered research physiotherapist.
Cardiovascular Health information will be available from the British Heart Foundation (BHF), alongside refreshments and giveaways, while a quiz will be offered with prizes linked to women’s health and wellbeing.
Research Governance Manager at NHS Borders, Joy Dawson says an area around the main staircase at Borders General Hospital will be devoted to promoting #Red4Research this Friday, including an eye-catching banner made especially for the occasion.
The team will be wearing red t-shirts and distributing leaflets on some of the studies they have been running and asking people what they think about research.
The Neuroprogressive and Dementia Network (NRS NDN) is encouraging all to celebrate and support health and care research at the main reception of Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital on Friday and will be inviting discussion around their activities.
NRS Cancer Research Network will meanwhile hold a workshop in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre on #Red4Research Day.
The Beatson Clinical Research Facility is hosting a staff open day — including the Beatson Cancer Charity and a host of other teams — which aims to raise awareness of the multi-disciplinary roles involved in making research happen and delivering high-quality, patient centred research.
NRS supports the placement, setup, and delivery of clinical research studies. As a partnership of Scottish NHS Boards and the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of Scottish Government, it ensures NHS Scotland provides the best environment to support research and contributes towards a thriving life sciences sector.
